This isn’t willpower depletion in the classic sense — it’s probably a combination of mental fatigue, reduced attention, and a tendency to default to the status quo under cognitive load. The practical response is the same regardless of mechanism: protect high-stakes decisions for the morning, batch trivial choices, and treat “decision count” as a daily budget.
Stress Inoculation vs. Avoidance
A counterintuitive finding: people who regularly expose themselves to moderate, manageable stress — cold showers, time pressure, difficult conversations, hard physical training — show better stress tolerance under novel pressure. Not because they’ve “strengthened their willpower” but because they’ve raised the threshold at which the threat response fires. When You Do Need to Override
