I’ve always loved trucks. It started in a sandbox in central New Jersey, where in my formative years I’d spend hours on end playing with yellow toy trucks of all sizes. Fast forward a number of decades: I still adore trucks –of all sizes– and this one is no exception. Does this truck do my beloved Tonka toys justice? Read on.
The Ram really is quite an advanced truck. The biggest difference is the rear multi-link design with coil springs, or in the case of our test truck, the optional height-adjustable and automatic load levelling advanced air suspension. Couple this with the exquisitely tuned electric rack-and-pinion power steering setup and an extremely stiff boxed and extensively gusseted frame and you have one fantastic riding truck. There is no question that this is the best riding truck on the market today, bar none. Not only is it fantastic to drive on road, but things get even better off road. This truck soaks up bumps, dips, potholes, ruts, and whatever you can throw at it. It’s one of the best off road vehicles I’ve ever tested. This truck is just amazing in the mud!
There are many other great features on the ram too. The 5.7 Hemi pulls authoritatively in each of the Ram’s 8 gears (Yes, it has an EIGHT speed transmission). This might sound overkill, but it means the Ram is always in the right gear for power and torque. This is especially important off road, though welcomed on the street, where the big crew cab clicked off a 7.9 second 0-60 run. The truck always had passing power to spare, and I was able to get fuel economy into the mid 20s in mixed driving. Mileage misers will be happy to learn about a newly-available 1500 diesel model, which will undoubtedly get stellar fuel mileage. The interior of the truck is really top notch, with leather surfaces everywhere. The centerpieces are the 7″ LCD info display in the instrument cluster and an 8.4″ multimedia display in the dash. Both of these work beautifully and integrate all of the Ram’s controls very well. Our test truck had perforated leather seats with heating and cooling, as well as DVD navigation and a very good Alpine audio system. The interior comfort is knocking on the door of some of the latest luxury sedans.
All in all, I really enjoyed my time with the 2013 Ram 1500 Sport. Off-road or on, it is truly the most comfortable truck out there. With all of the luxury features, capabilities, and outright comfort, it should be on your short list of pickups to drive should you be in the market for one. Ram has really done their homework and brought a truly standout product to the marketplace. With a huge range of cab, bed, and option configurations, the 2013 Ram 1500 is without a doubt the Blog of Speed 2013 Truck of the year!
